Living Together

Leicester is well-known for its harmony and the many communities that live well together in the city.

This project has documented and preserved the experiences that lie behind this cohesion and community spirit by recording the memories of 103 people who have made their home in Leicester.

The Project

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Living Together is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to fund this project to record and archive conversations with people from a broad range of backgrounds and walks of life who live in Leicester.

Leicester is a 'melting pot', and the interviews reflect this. Of the 103 interviews we recorded, roughly a third of participants were born overseas, a third in the UK outside Leicester, and a third were born in Leicester. The youngest participant was 18, while the oldest was 100 years old. People had a wide variety of cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds. We worked with neurodiverse individuals and those with a physical disability. The LGBTQ+ community is also represented.

About St Philip's Centre

St Philip’s Centre is a small organisation with a big impact on society. We passionately believe that, even with the challenges of today’s world, people can learn to live well together. We respond to ignorance, mistrust, and hostility between people of all religions and no religion. We work in Leicester, Leicestershire and across the Midlands to build knowledge, understanding and trust among people from many different backgrounds. The centre also has a real and continuing commitment to help facilitate the search for solutions when community threats and tensions emerge. We work across society providing a safe space where difficult and complex issues can be discussed, and solutions found. Visit www.stphilipscentre.co.uk for more information.
